safe mode start up

ok, this is a really easy one, the instructions I printed
to restart the computer in safe mode don't match what
happens. I do not get a prompt asking me to select an
operating system to start. It boots automatically up. I
think there is a key I need to press to interuppt the
normal boot up? If so, I don't know what it is. Help.
