Safe Mode Hangs

V

vameo

Greetings, My winxp works fine in the normal mode but when I try to start
in safe mode it hangs at driver Mup.sys. I Googled without any success. I
would appreciate any assistance in this matter. I can't give an indication
when it stopped working as I use it infrequently. Thanks in advance !

Start > Run > type in MSCONFIG > click OK > click BOOT.INI > click the box
next to /SAFEBOOT (make sure "minimal" has the black dot) > click APPLY >
click OK > you'll get a box on your screen that the computer needs to restart
RESTART > sit back and watch the show > your computer will restart in Safe
Mode.

Once you are finished doing whatever it is you are doing in Safe Mode,
follow the same steps as above but clear the check mark next to /SAFEBOOT and
restart the computer. The computer will restart in normal mode.

That's a great way to get the user hung up with no way to restart normally.
They're problem isn't getting the computer to start loading safe mode, the
problem is that it hangs partway into the boot.

I'll try to separate this reply into two parts.

First, for the original poster, Vameo--
If you are attempting to get into XP Safe Mode, my step-by-step procedures
as I previously wrote and outlined will work. I don't care if you trust me
or not, but if you try them yourself you'll see for yourself that those steps
do, in fact, work.

Your method, which you didn't outline but which may have been tapping the
F8 key while your computer was booting up, also works, but something which
you need is PATIENCE, because while the computer does it's thing, it may
appear to be "hung." If you went and fixed yourself a cupajoe, then used the
bathroom and then returned to your computer you most likely would have found
that your computer was no longer "hanging."

For Rick--
Your "...to get the user hung up with no way to restart normally..." is not
understood. In my original reply to Vameo, I typed in an entire paragraph on
how to get out of Safe Mode and return to Normal Mode. My original reply to
Vameo is below. See for yourself.

I agree that I responded with directions on how to get into Safe Mode and
did not address Vameo's computer "hanging." I interpreted Vameo's comments
as his desiring to get into Safe Mode. That his computer was "hanging"
wasn't a concern when I wrote my reply. My reply was to outline to him to an
alternate method of achieving what I interpreted him wanting to do, which was
to get into Safe Mode. Was I wrong in my interpretation? Only Vameo can
answer that.

As I wrote to Vameo (above), I think the solution to a computer "hanging"
(or seeming to a "hang") while using the F8 method for getting into Safe Mode
is patience. Before I discovered the BOOT.INI method, I also used the F8
method. My computer also appeared to "hang." Using the BOOT.INI method, I
no longer have that problem.

I close by thanking you for your good wishes for my luck. My wife and I are
going to both Laughlin and Las Vegas over the Easter weekend and I'm sure we
can both use all the good luck wishes we can get! :)

Hi Jim,

Reread the OP's post. If he tries to boot safe mode, the system hangs. If he
does like you instructed, which is to force a safe mode boot, then the
system will hang repeatedly until the /safeboot switch is removed from
boot.ini. As he cannot successfully boot to safe mode, he will not be able
to easily undo the switch. He will be unable to load the system without
having to load the recovery console and rebuild boot.ini from scratch.
Forcing the safeboot mode will result in a catch-22.

Have fun in Vegas. I never have any luck with that, so rarely bother.
