Safe Mode fails to operate after installing SP2

Yep. Another one with this problem!

I installed SP2 last month and was unable to run in Safe Mode from that
update. Shortly afterwards I did a complete reinstallation of the operating
system, but did not install SP2 - Safe Mode ran fine. Yesterday I reinstalled
SP2 and Safe Mode will not work again with the same problem as before. It
gets as far as loading up to system\32\drivers\mup.sys before rebooting.

Please note that suggesting to go to msconfig and altering the boot.ini
setting to "safeboot" just puts the computer into an endless cycle of
rebooting, which can only be got out of by using the CD initiated Recovery
Console.

As was mentioned by someone in a previous thread, its not too much of a
problem when your computer's running fine like mine is now, but the
inevitable day will come where I will need this function, for sure!

Any help would be appreciated to get Safe Mode up and running again!

Wow! That was painful! As someone towards the bottom posted....."like walking
through a forest with a blindfold on"

Despite trying some of those suggestions nothing has helped and as this is
only happening when SP2 is installed, I think the best remedy is starting
again and forgetting SP2 altogether.

Hi!

Have now been facing the same type problem. So far not resolving it, but
will
go on checking ...

The problem is not on mup.sys itself, but on some driver loaded in a second
or two after that ... Hard to say how to find/recognize the real problem
point,
maybe backing with some update, or detaching some components and rebooting,
or checking possible Stop Error details, or doing some other troubleshooting
etc.,
and as a last hope action try to Repair install the Windows with a full
licence Retail CD.

Best regards,

Pete V.
