Windows XP Safe Mode and frozen mouse pointer.

I recently put my computer into Safe Mode by checking the Safeboot option in
boot.ini. When the computer booted into safe mode I found to my surprise that
my mouse pointer was frozen. I eventually managed thru trial and error to use
the keyboard to uncheck the safeboot option and reboot normally. I'm not sure
even now that I know exactly what I did. All I know is that for now safe mode
isn't a safe option for me. Does anyone know the keyboard layout for
operating in safe mode without a mouse?
