Safe Mode Booting

To get rid of a virus I setup my system to boot directly into safe mode. Well for some reason while booting into safe mode it freezes and restarts to a screen for me to select to start normally or into safe mode. If i chooses safe mode it just repeats and goes back to the same screen. If i choose start normally it tries to start in safe mode since that is what what i selected in msconfig andreturns me to the same screen. I cannot seem get out of this cycle. Any help as to what i could do will be appreciated.

Yes, i have. But prior to setting my config i turned off system restore as directed to get rid of the virus. so when i try that option nothing happens because all my restore points were deleted.

Hi Josh,

Change your settings here:

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and un-check /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok,
reboot.

Hi Josh,

System Restore has nothing to do with the last known good config option. The
problem you have now is that boot.ini is appended with safeboot /minimal. If
you have a regular WinXP CD, you can load the Recovery Console and rebuild
it (bootcfg /rebuild).

Um Kelly, he can't get to normal or safe mode to do that. Josh'll have to
rebuild boot.ini to remove the /safeboot option from the Recovery Console.

Or get the free EDITBINI from the free downloads at www.bootitng.com ,
put it on a DOS boot floppy, boot and run that, to edit boot.ini and
delete the /safeboot:. . . manually leaving just /fastdetect. This may
be necessary if this is an OEM Restore CD that does not provide for
booting to the repair option

Hi Alex,

Good idea. Have you tried the "type" command for editing boot.ini in the RC?

AFAIK Type does not provide for editing, it is only a viewer. And RC
for some reason does not include EDIT
