Safe mode, administrator, user accts, create password, then FREEZE

Every time, on a new clean install with WinXP-home, even before adding s.p.2,
before adding any apps or going online (in a 'virgin'!!) system, I can NEVER
get past the first click on creating a password for the administrator! Never
fails, (should say always fails). Is it me or the XP? Without security, I
have to lock my XP in a floor safe! A socially ridiculous position! My
friends' think I'm a kook or a spy! Help please!

OK, I have a Dell Dimension 2400, 1 year old, running winXP-home, purchased
direct from Dell. Can you tell me how to update bios, should I google it, or
call Dell?
That's for your help.:)

Thanks for you help. You really know what your doing. I will use the link you
gave me and dig in. My computer works fine without using the safe mode, but
that's not the point. I was virgin newbie when I purchased it. Now I'm not
going to stop until Dell gives me an answer, since there must be one! I'm
going to use Lockergnome forums, and find out what is involved with "flashing
the bios". If you do read this thread, and have any more suggestions, I'll
keep it active!

I tried flashing the bios. as per instructions from Dell and Newsgroup. This,
however, did absolutely NO GOOD! The problem remains the same: Enter safe
mode, administrator, user accts, create password, then the first click
produces a stop error i.e. the computer locks, freezes, enters that
unrecoverable void--where the only way out is to shut off power the hard way
(turning off the power). Anyone else have some ideas?
