Due to a virus, Symantec suggested I set my IBM ThinkPad T43 running XP Pro
into
a Safe Mode boot. Upon doing so, the computer fails to recognize my
username and password, including the administrator.

Upon system boot, I am presented with the Safe Mode login screen, unable to
enter safe mode or any mode. The computer is unusable without performing a
clean install. I do not have the OS or recovery disks.

Any suggestions to correcting this issue are appreciated!

Do you have a USB keyboard? You might try entering the BIOS and setting
it to enable legacy support for USB devices.

To circumvent the problem entering Safe Mode, try one of these Virus

Elmo, thank you for your reply and assistance. I do have a USB keyboard, but
I have no idea how to enter the BIOS. I cannot log in at any point, not into
safe mode, not into XP.

I have now completed an OS clean reload via the IBM embedded tools and my
problem has been rectified. Thanks for your assistance. This is a wonderful
forum, keep up the good work!

Shannon also in safe mode

Dave,

I have just encountered the exact same problem as you. Also followed the
Symantec instructions to start in safe mode in XP Pro to try to delete an
"undeletable" virus but now cannot even log into my laptop.

I'm not sure what you mean by a complete OS clean reload. I have a Dell
laptop and do not have any OS disks so any suggestions that you or others may
have will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Shannon

Shannon,

My Lenovo/IBM laptop allows me to reload the o/s from scratch, wipe out the
hard drive and just begin anew. Your Dell may not have this ability, nor
will you want to wipe out the hard drive contents. I use my laptop as a
backup.
