no safe mode if use password

xp sp2 Dell 4600 I have a password
I boot to safe mode and follow all the prompts to the blue screen that asks
for password
I select the computer name not administrator and hit enter, not typing the
password in.
No matter whether I select admin or the pc name or no matter whether I
enter password or not,
The screen freezes as in I cannot move the mouse.
How do I gain accress to safe mode while maintaining a password? - or should
I remove the password like I have been doing to get into safe mode?
Thank you

The computer name cannot be the same as an account name You won't be able
to log in using the computer name, because there is no such account.

If this is XP Home, use "administrator" as the account name, and leave the
password blank. Just press Enter.

Or, use your user name, and enter your password - press Enter if there isn't
one.

What happens in normal mode? What has led you to use Safe Mode?

The blue screen you normally see when you boot up (using a password) is the
same screen I get when I follow the prompts to use safe mode but whatever I
click on, causes the mouse to freeze and I must hard boot to power down.
My ac't name is the one under users in the control panel and has the
password that effectually allows me to log on with the password I see next to
the ac't name.
All is well in normal mode. I recently had to use safe mode to "cleanly"
run a program. That is when I found out that I need to remove the act p-word
to run safe mode.
Please remeber If I touch any thing on the blue screen in safe mode the
mousenfreezes and I have to power down. Thanks for sticking with me.

I had reason to use safe mode to run spyware and a/v programs - any ideas
about the inability to use safe mode while pc is password protected?
Important to note is that if I make any move when the blue screen prompting
me to continue safe mode appears, the mouse and screen freezes. It is the
same process and screens that work when I remove the password.

I just wanted the members to know M.S. has acknowledged a problem and
receating an admin with a new password was a suggested solution.
