does anyone know how to initialize smart capabilities
using XP Pro.

you could download a little program called Belarc Advisor at
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html It does a complete analysis of your
machine and claims to enable S.M.A.R.T. capabilities on your drive if your
drive indeed supports this. It claims to have enabled this function on my
drive, although I know of no way to know for sure outside of what this
program says. I have no option in my BIOS to enable this and always knew my
hard drive supported it but I didn't know how to enable it. HTH
 
You don't. It can only be set in the BIOS.
