S.M.A.R.T. reports NTFS Drive as "Status BAD"

I have XP PRO - SP2 and , recently , on Bootup , the machine stops at
the black initial screen with the message :-

"Ultra DMA MODE-6 S.M.A.R.T. Capable & Status BAD - Backup & Replace
.. Press F1 to continue "

This is the No2 Drive and , fortunately , I have everything backed up
on it but I was wondering what steps I'd be advised to take here , (
apart from replacing it that is ! )

It seems to be otherwise operating OK and , had I not had S.M.A.R.T.
turned ON , I would have been unaware of anything untoward !

How about running Chkdisk ? - the Disk is formatted in NTFS

Chkdsk with the /F(ix) or /R(epair) might be in order. Just be aware
to resolve & fix issues on a dirty volume, Chkdsk may remove any
number of files/folders in the process. If you have imaging software,
you might want to take an image prior to running Chkdsk.

SMART measures indicators of failing drives. The drive is throwing errors but the electronics and windows are compensating.

Hi

If S.M.A.R.T. is reporting a "Status BAD", please think about backing
everything up now, and purchasing/installing a new hard drive!!!!

Many hard drive manufacturers provide a diagnostics utility that you can
download from their web site.

Visit the support web site of the manufacturer of your hard
drive and look for a hard drive fitness diagnostic utility tool.

Having seen the same error, I can only say: "Back up your data
daily until you replace that drive."

On those machines I on which I've seen those S.M.A.R.T. warnings,
catastrophic hard drive failures invariably followed. Some hard
drives lasted for a few days after the warnings first appeared, one
lasted months, and some lasted only minutes. I suppose the one that
lasted months could be considered a false alarm, as months hardly
translate to "imminent," but, on the whole, I'd suggest you take the
warnings seriously.

Chkdsk isn't likely to have much affect on what is usually a problem
with the drive's electronics, rather than the platter surface or file
system.

If you have any sense, you will replace the drive at your earliest
convenience.. today would be a good day to do it..

The more you mess with it, the greater chance of it failing completely, like
no life in it at all..

Thanks for all the replies - I reckon I'll take the overwhelming
advice and replace the drive - will be a good excuse to get a SATA
drive this time !!
