When I enable HDD S.M.A.R.T. system in the BIOS, Windows XP refuses to boot
(the computer stops responding, nothing appears on the screen).
When I turn it off, it will boot fine. How do I get Windows XP to run with
HDD SMART?

Upgrade the BIOS. If that doesn't fix it then you could experiment with a
new HDD.

or leave it off and download a free HDD monitoring program, I have tried a
few, they work well with XP.

My experience with S.M.A.R.T. has been that it's not all that great
anyway. The only time I've seen it issue an alert of a hdd problem it
was too late.

If you want it enabled check with the mb manf and see if available BIOS
update addresses the issue. If it does not I would not bother to update it.

I ammend my previous reply (had more coffee and not holding the baby
now); this is a motherboard problem that has nothing to do with XP.
Contact the manufacturer for technical assistance. If they do recommend
updating the BIOS read and understand the instructions completely and if
you have flakey power in your area take precaustions to not lose power
(use a UPS) while flashing the BIOS.

Good luck.

No, that's NOT a good enough reason to risk a bios flash.

True. If SMART tells you that you have a problem chances are it's
correct. However, it's not a [catch all] by any means as your hard drive
could be in the process of dying and SMART may, and often doesn't, EVER
see the failure coming.

And that's my point, it is SUPPOSED to warn you when monitored drive
parameters are moving out of tolerance.
