Running out of some type of resource - how to figure out what's goingon?

Bill

I have a problem with Windows (XP Pro, SP2, all updates installed)
from time to time where it runs out of some resource/memory. The
symptoms are that programs cannot open new windows, and when I do an
alt-tab, the program gets minimized instead (basically it appears as
though it's going backwards (what a shift-alt-tab normally does).
The "File" menu in some open programs also may not drop down, or
will just show a limited number of choices. If I close a program,
the symptoms go away (for the other programs, of course). There is
no message from Windows about a resource problem (as I have seen
when my swap file filled up). It's almost like the old GDI memory
problem under ME and earlier. What sort of resource could XP be
running out of, how can I tell what's using all of it, and is there
a way to increase the amount of it in the system?

Thanks..
Bill

Thanks. I posted my problem on a message board at work and got a
similar response, to change that registry key. I think I changed
it to 6144.

Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126962

You may be running out of desktop heap space.

I recently had this problem myself and bumped up the second value to
5120. My problems have since gone away.

Paul
