running IE crashes my computer

Since buying the computer from Dell in 8/2003 opening IE would crash my
computer usually with in a few munites. Since I was an AOL user I simply
didn't open IE and used AOL's browser. I left AOL and switched to Comcast
cable which doesn't have its own browser. I am currently using Mozilla
Firefox. I would like to be able to use IE. Can I delte it and reinstall it?
Should I restore my entire system. I run McAfee 2004, AntiVir, Spybot,
Ad-aware, Registry Mechanic, ect. searching for a virus cause but have not
found one.
