rundll32.exe 100% cpu utilization

M

Matt

I have an IBM T41 laptop running XPpro. I have spybot, ad-
aware, and norton antivirus running. My problem is after
about 10 minutes of my laptop running, the process
named "rundll32.exe" uses 100% of the cpu process... I can
end the process after I turn on the computer. But if I
wait for the process to kick in to 100%, I cannot end the
process. If I keep my laptop running for over an hour, i
cannot shut down my computer without holding the on/off
button because the OS cannot kill the process either.
Anyone else having this problem?

thanks - i went to the symantic site per your
recommentdation. it says this might be a trojan virus
(baskdoor.lastdoor.10. But I have Norton Antivirus Corp
edition. I run the scan every week as well as live
updates. Norton as never found this virus before. Also, I
did do a full sys restore the other week. After a couple
of days, the error came back to my laptop. I am guessing
it is either from a website I went to, or it is inherent
to my laptop configuration. IBM says they do not have any
logged bugs w/problems such as mine, so I figure this is a
windows problem at this point. When I run Spybot S&D, it
does find an error every time called "DSO Exploit". There
are five affected files they say they fix. But if I run
spybot s&d again, it show the error is still there. The
description of DSO Exploit is something about a security
hole in IE... Do you have any other suggestions for me?

You can safely ignore the spybot DSO report as long as you are current with windows update
Speaking of updates is Norton corp updated with the latest definitions? If so reboot into safe mode and run a scan with it

Hi Matt, I found this in another group it's a responce to someone else who is having the same problem as you ar

Although your computer may be virus-free, you probably have spyware o
it that NAV won't pick up. Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destro
from www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. B
sure to update these programs before running them. These programs ar
free, so run them both since they complement each other. It is best t
run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also nee
to run CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html
Please read the instructions carefully. A great resource for dealin
with spyware is http://www.spywareinfo.com. Also, make sure you'v
visited Windows Update and applied all security patches. Make sure yo
are running a firewall

Hi Map,

I have exactly the same problem as you. I have a T41. I also did a full
system restore and certainly the 'incidence' of 100% cpu utilization with
this restore appears to have gone down but not completely.....

Does anyone have a solution?
