"run as administrator" option greyed out- please help!

Hi,

I am trying to install Stata 10 on windows Vista. The manual says that
the first time I run Stata, I must run it as an administrator by right-
clicking on the Stata application icon.

However, when I right-click, I do not see the option to 'run as
adminstrator'. I went to the Properties> advanced, and the option to
'run as administrator' was greyed out.

Do you have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? And how can I get
Vista to allow me to 'run as administrator'?????

Thanks so very much,
Kate

You know, you can disable UAC, which controls Run As Administrator. With UAC
disabled, you don't need RAM to do anything, and you should be able to
proceed with the install. Once the install is done, then you can enable UAC
again.

To enable/disable UAC, you use the Windows-Key and R-key, which should
pop-up the Run Box where you enter MSCONFIG. You can go to the Tools tab
where you can disable/enable UAC.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

I tried turning off UAC under control panel > user accounts. I was
still not able to start Stata-- I still get the same error message:

"I cannot open C:\Program Files\Stata10\STATA.LIC for writing.
No Action Taken."

? ?

I was told by the FAQs on the Stata website, that this is because the
default Vista permission settings do not allow applications write
permissions to their respective install directories even if you are
logged in to a machine as administrator. Stata needs these permissions
to install.

They say to get around the problem you must right-click on the Stata
executable in the Stata install directory and select "Run as
Administrator" from the right-click menu to open Stata. But as I
mentioned, I cannot run as administrator.

You may be able to create a short-cut for the install exe and go to
Properties on the the short-cut and do Run As Administrator.

Have you tried that?

If the install exe is on the hard drive, then you right-click the exe and do
a Create Short Cut, which should put the short-cut in the same folder as the
exe or do a Send To and Send the Short-cut to the Desktop. In either case,
you should see the Run As Admin with you right-click the short-cut. You
should also be able to see the Advanced button too off of Properties. Well,
that's the way it works on my Vista. ;-)

Hi,

Thanks so very much for all your help. I don't think that I have the
install exe on my hard drive- I am installing the program from a CD.
Do you know how to get the install exe on the hard drive?

You make a folder on the HD called Kate, as an example, if you have a enough
disk space to copy the entire CD to the HD, which you should have enough
space. You select all the files/folders on the CD and copy/paste the CD to
Kate. And you run the install.exe form Kate, which should be able to make
the short-cut at that point. You should be able to copy from the root
folder on the CD so that it copies everything at once to Kate.

If that don't work for you, then you need to get on the phone with the
software's tech support and tell them *you are telling me I need to Run As
Admin* to install your software on Vista. Tech Support, you tell me how to
do this.

Hi,

Thanks again for all of your help. I created a shortcut from the exe,
as you described. But it still won't let me Run As Administrator,
either by right-click or in properties. I will contact the software
company... I am fed up with Vista!

Maybe you're not on an administrative user's account. In other words, maybe
you don't have the right level of access to be given the choice to run as
administrator.
I don't know a lot about user levels, but there probably are some folks on
this group who knows that stuff inside out.

I have the same problem with BOINC, which I use for grid computing/medical
research.
Install the program somewhere other than Program Files and it works.
MS calls that security, I call it a joke. (go ahead, Flame away)
Just another reason I only have Vista on only 1 of over 200 machines I
administer.
UAC does nothing but teach users to click through a bunch of un-necessary
prompts until the day arrives that a real threat shows up and you click
through automatically...definately not ready for prime time.

Get the Install CD in the drive, find install.exe on the CD, right click and
select run as admin.

It's a software issue and not a Vista issue on how to install the software.
I had the same problem on XP Pro where a software just wouldn't let me
install it, a software for a print server. I was pissed with the software
and XP, but tech support got me through it. They will do the same for you,
hang in there and roll with the punches. ;-)

Oh, one other thing, you are logged on to the computer with an Administrator
account I assume!

You don't need to change any properties, you just need to log in as
administrator
Double-click the install.exe and it will install itself

why should I have to mess with that?
it's defective programming as far as I am concerned.
I can break all kinds of things and call it security,
I can wrap a dog turd in a Baby Ruth wrapper, but that doesn't make it taste
any better...
