Rules for Sent Messages

I have always been a little confused by the rules available for "Sent"
messages in Outlook (currently using 2003).

I have created a variety of folders in "My Outlook" folders, for various
main subjects (Clients, Family, Friends, Suppliers, etc) and then
sub-folders for the individual people/firms. I have rules set so that when
mail is received from various people, the mail is automatically moved to the
appropriate folder. Great - it keeps everything neat and tidy. I imagine
most people do something similar.

My problem comes with outgoing mail. I don't seem to be able to create a
rule that will move replies/new mail to the appropriate folder. Yes, I can
send a "copy" of the sent mail to the folder, but then have to manually
delete the original - and risk deleting messages that aren't covered by
specific rules. It's a pain in the but having to "file" all the outgoings
manually.

I suspect I might be missing something. Can anyone help please?

No. You are missing nothing. Welcome to the wonderful world of
Micros**t and its rules. They are crap when it comes to outgoing
messages.

Do check out the area Tools->Options->Preferences->Email options.

It might give you a bit more control.

Even if you do manage to get a copy of the reply in the folder with
the original message, you will find that you have to manual mark the
message read. "Of course I have read it, moron. I wrote the effing
message."

You may find some add-on utilities out there to achieve what you want.
For example, earlier today I came across something called Auto-Mate.

http://www.pergenex.com/auto-mate/index.shtml

I haven't installed it yet, so don't know if it will help.
