mark outgoing messages as "read'

W

Wilfred

I set up rules in Outlook 2003 to move my outgoing messages to specified
folders. Works great! However, every message I send is marked "unread",
forcing me to go to the Unread Mail search folder and manually mark them as
read. I have accidentally marked new, incoming mail as read when performing
this task.

I have tried to modify the rules that move these messages to their specified
folder so that they get marked as "read" but I do not see an option for
that.

That's because there is none. I don't know of any way to mark as read
outgoing messages moved to folders via rules.

I need this same feature. In order to use Conversations more effectively, I
have my Sent Items moved back to the InBox and that works well, but I really
would like the messages I create (new, replies and forwards) to not to show
up as Unread. There are all kinds of articles explaining how this works and
the "unread" status is such an obvious followup, there just MUST be some way
to do it. Actually, in my opinion, it should never have be set to Unread
anyway since it's a reply

What makes you say there "must" be a way? If you use a rule to move an
outgoing message to a folder other than Sent Items, it WILL be marked as
unread with no way within the rules engine to do otherwise. You could
certainly write an add-in that accomplishes it, but there seems to be no way
within Outlook.

Brian, I appreciate your reading and replying to my message but not sure why
as you seem irritated that I would want such a thing, that I would expect
that it's possible - and you simply reiterated the same information that
you'd posted before. I read it the first time and I really think there must
be a way to do it since the functionality is there in the Rules Engine - it's
just not available for sent messages. There's also an option for performing
a "custom action" but I've been unable to find out how you use that screen.
Surely, someone has but it doesn't seem to be documented anywhere that I can
find. If you don't have any ideas, it's ok - you don't have to repeat your
information. I'm just looking for answers that I bet someone out there has
figured out.

that I would want such a thing,

I can well believe you want it. Many do. However, you didn't say there
_should_ be such a feature, you said there _must_ be such a feature - i.e.,
it exists and no one is telling you about it. "Should" and "must" are not
the same word.
that I would expect that it's possible -

You can expect it all you want. That doen't mean it's available.
and you simply reiterated the same
information that you'd posted before.

Because you didn't seem to understand it the first time. You keep insisting
a feature exists that does not.

Right. "Not available". Exactly what I was saying. You take me to task
for saying "it MUST be available" and then say the same thing yourself. Are
you annoyed with yourself for "reiterating the same information" that I gave
you? If you're consistent, you would be.

I already said that you should be able to write an add-on that performs the
action you want, so why aren't you posting in the Outlook programming
newsgroup and visiting the Outlook programming web sites?
news://msnews,microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.program_vba is the
former. One of the latter is http://www.outlookcode.com/
