Rule saves message in Inbox and proper folder, Outlook 2002

I have rules in Outlook 2002 to MOVE mail to specific folders based upon
sender's adress. It works for some but for others it COPIES the file to the
folder. I have tried regenerating the rule but that doesn't work. Any
suggestions on either how to make the rule work properly all the time or a
good workaround would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Add the "stop processing more rules" action to each rule.

Thank you for your quick response!

Does the arrangement of order of the rules make any difference? I found that
some that work properly are near the bottom in the list of rules. The reason
I ask this is that I have many rules. I could combine some of them but that
requires adding the names to my contacts list, which I will do if necessary.
However, I don't need addresses like Staples in the contacts folder.

Thanks again for your help.

The order is critically important!!! Rules are processed from the top down. A message handled by a rule with a "stop processing" action won't be handled by later rules.

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry that I didn't make my question clear. i
noticed that some of the rules that functioned correctly were at the end of
the rules. I wonder if rule order affected the proper functioning of the
rule. However, in checking the whole list, I found no obvious trend. I will
use your "stop processing" addition.

Thanks for the great tip!

I added "stop processing more rules" and it made no difference. I have 34
rules. The first four worked properly but the fifth didn not. After that
there is no apparent pattern to which work properly and which don't. The last
one works properly but some of those immediately above do not.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

So does "work properly" mean the same thing as before? What's the fifth rule?

Yes, the previous four rules move message from Inbox to designated folder.

Here is rule 5:

Apply this rule after the message arrives from Dell Direct Deals and move it
to the Junk Mail folder and stop processing more rules

I created the Junk Mail folder name. I have other rules that copy the
message to other folder names. Some work properly and some don't.

One more thing, all rules worked properly until sometime last year. When
they copied instead of moved the message, I deleted and recreated several of
them. The rule still did a copy. I did a reinstall but never deleted Outlook
completely and did a new install.

Thanks for your help

Here is rule 4 (which moves message properly):

Apply this rule after the message arrives from BonsaiBill and move it to the
BonsaiBill folder

This rule takes messages that come into my juno account and moves them to
the named folder. However, I do have rules to move a message from this
folder to another folder, e.g., Junk Mail.

Add the "stop processing" action to ALL rules that move a message.

Well, I'm stumped. One thing you might try for diagnostic purposes is using a different action -- say, adding a category. THat will give you a better picture of whether it's the condition or action that's the problem.

Thanks for all of the help. I put in the "stop prcessing rules" on all rules
as Brian suggested. They appear to be working properly now.
