RPC won't start

Hi,

I am struggling with this one.

My wifes laptop won't start properly. It is hardly allowing anything to run.
It goes into Windows XP Pro (SP2) but many things fail to run.

It all appears to stem from the RPC not running.

The hard disk was apparently not booting, so I put it into a caddy. I ran
chkdsk and it reported a LOT of errors. I am assuming that as the disk was
kept out of the laptop then placed between a pair of speakers (wasn't me,
she wasn't aware of the speaker issue) problems arose. The chkdsk reported
LOTS of issues, many to do with the security descriptors.

Anyhow, the laptop boots now but nothing appears to work.

I have gone into computer management / services and note that RPC is
stopped. (In fact, I have to click onto Standard tab to see the services,
the extended tab seems empty.)

When I attempt to start the RPC, I get "Error 5: Access is denied."

I can't even check the error logs as I think RPC is required.

I have since done a repair install over the top and still get the error.

Now, because of the security descriptors issue, I have also since tried a
fixacl program and it fixed a lot of issues. However, after rebooting, the
issue still exists.

I am out of ideas now. Any help to get this fixed would be appreciated. A
re-install is a last resort.

Seeing that chkdsk reported lots of errors, a re-installation would give you
the quickest and the most robust result. Everything else amounts to
time-consuming tinkering because you don't really know what's lurking there.

Hi,

Verify that BITS is running: Start/Run/Services.msc
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

Info:

Error 5: Access is Denied
This error indicates that the access permissions for BITS have been
modified. To repair these access permissions, use one of the following
methods, depending on the operating system.

Windows XP
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sc sdset bits
D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
In the General tab, click Start.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for your help, but I still have the problems.

I copied and pasted that command (I don't think I would have got it right by
typing it) and I got...

[SC] SetServiceObjectSecurity SUCCESS

Now, that long text is the security descriptor, is that a general descriptor
or do I need to generate it from the broken system? (I will try scshow from
another (RPC) service)

I can't double click the service in services.msc because it won't let me, so
I just try to start it... it then errors:

Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local
Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.
