HELP! RPC won't start. This messes a lot of things

D

David Peters

I have XP Pro and SP2. I ran Microsoft Baseline Seurity Advisor on
account of what it found I changed a few services.

Now RPC will not start even though it is set to AUTO.

This means my system behaves very badly.

I have no taskbar and no start menu even though I applied Kelly tweak
(#117) to fix it. I can't drag and drop desktop icons, I can't paste
to the desktop, boot takes a long time, etc.

When I try and start RPC I get error code 1058 so I followed the
steps in: "Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service -
Error 1058."
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=838428
Basically it said to use safe mode to delete the registry key for
LEGACY_RPCSS in the Current Control Set. It doesn't help at all.

I ran a virus scanner recently so that should be ok.

Even my Component Services menu is messed up and it will not let me
see the Properties for any service including RPC. Is there a line
command for this?

What can I do!

Reinstall SP2?

Hi

Command prompt:

net start RpcSs

But your problem may lie in a dependency.

Can you post a copy of the actual Report in Event Viewer. Are
there any other Warning / Error Reports immediately before or
at the same time as the Report from which you have quoted?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
