RPC server not found

I'm trying to install a printer on an XP HP machine without SP1 or 2.
There are no printers installed and when I try, I get the RPC server not
found (or available) error. When I look in the Microsoft KB, there is a
convoluted answer about coping certain files over from another machine.
Also, when I try to load SP2, I get an error that says the encryption or
cryptograph file is damaged.
This machine is not mine and was given to my 84 year old Father-in-law.

Any ideas?? I do not have the HP disks.
