Router Problem

If you recall, I had a router problem involving a DI-Link 704P router.

Now I have a new D-Link EBR 2310 4-Port'er
It is connected to an external cable modem.
I have two XP PRO machines connected together, one AMD the other P4.
It has been working fine. Now suddenly it is not.
What has happened it this:

If everything is connected, I can access files between machines just
fine. But I lose internet access completely from both machines.

If I connect machine 2 (arbitrary choice) only to the modem direct, I
can access the internet from machine 2, but of course I can't access
files between machines, and of course I can't access internet from
machine 1.

This tells me the modem must be okay. It suggests to me that
something is affecting router access to the machines insofar as
internet accessing is concerned, BUT NOT FILE-SHARING. What could it
be?

Lately, I am thinking I simply cannot win.

Can anyone help here?

Access the router setup. You've lost the gateway settings.
Re-setup the router.
