root certificates

Hi

New frustrated Vista owner. From start windows defender wont startup (
program wont initialize, error 0x800106ba) when i try to manually start it
up, or windows update or pretty much anything else online, i keep getting a
root certificate error when trying to download (error 0x800b0109 for
defender, Code 800B0109 for win update, etc) Ive tried downloading the
correct certificate but nothing happens. It feels like since defender isnt
starting up that its not there to certify these other downloads certificates
.. Any solutions to get defender going so i can get certificates??

id love to, but when i run windows update i get the same certificate error.
800b0109. which takes me to the troubleshoot page which says

"Click to open Windows Update.

In the left pane, click Check for updates.

If prompted, provide your network credentials. If Windows doesn't prompt you
to provide credentials and you see the error code 8024401B instead, click Try
again.

When prompted, provide the credentials that you use to access your network.
Windows will automatically continue the update process and notify you if you
need to install updates."

here, i never get prompted to provide credentials, no matter how may times i
re-try updater

Thanks - I have some thought about what is happening, but no clear ideas.

Is your machine a home machine, or is it on a corporate network? If you are
on a corporate network, do you know whether there is a local update
distribution system in use? WSUS?
