RIS Stops

When I use my CD based image the RIS process works fine.

When I use a RIPrep image the install suddenly hangs and
the screen goes blank. This happens either during or right
after files are downloaded.

Where do I look to solve this problem?

The first thing is to slipstream the latest service pack into your ris
image.

Generally, the procedure is
1. Create a flat of Windows 2000 on the hard drive (the i386 folder),
2. Download the latest service pack and extract it with the -x switch.
3. Slipstream the flat image with the service pack.
4. Click Start>Run>RISETUP and create a cd-based service pack RIS image.
5. RIS a workstation.
6. Customize the workstation (avoid updating the file NTOSKRNL.EXE with your
patches)
7. Run RIPREP on the workstation.

I did slipstream SP4. This solved my previous problem of
the RIS process hanging when it started Windows the first
time.

How do I accomplish step 6?

Step 6 means you set up the desktop the way you want with the extra software
you want (quicktime, adobe reader, shockwave, etc). You then install the
hotfixes from Windows Update, but watch that they don't change the
NTOSKRNL.EXE version number (search the file and write down the version).
Uninstall any hotfix that does change the version number. This usually
means you don't install hotfixes more than a few at a time.
