Riprep on a Windows XP SP1a Machine Fails

D

Dwayne

Problem:

Workstation with Windows XP SP1a which was installed via
RIS originally, will not successfully complete a
subsequent attempt to Riprep the machine after
installation of additional drivers and software.

Once riprep has copied over all of the files and completed
all other processess, the program halts and displays the
following error message.

Error Message Received:
Dialog Box title: STARTROM.COM
Message Text: Network location unavailable.

The same message appears for the following files:

NTDETECT
NTLDR
RISTNDRD.SIF

After hitting ok at each message the computer simply
reboots and begins the mini-setup process. I have
confirmed the the folder specified in the beginning of the
process actually exists on the server but I still can't
get a successful riprep.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you RIS a machine and immediately RIPREP it without installing anything
does the error occur?

The RIS image that was originally installed to the client - was it
WinXPSP1a?

Yes, the error still occurs. I have tried that as well as part of good
troubleshooting techniques.

As for the second question, the answer is yes.

I used the Volume license edition of Windows XP Pro, integrated the image
with SP1a, from MSDN and then created a Flat image from the resulting
directory.

That all sounds correct. Do you have other RIS images that are working
correctly?

Any errors recorded in the event log on the server?

Have the persmissions changed on the image folders?

I'm sure you have tried logging on as domain administrator during your test.

Have you checked the server by running Start>Run>"RISETUP -check" ?

Dwayne

No permissions changed
Have run riprep with Admin account
Not only have I verified the server several times but I also
rebuilt/re-imaged at least twice.

Well to answer your first question though; yes there are event log errors.
It looks as if the source of my problem lies with the following file:

"netclass.inf"

Actual event log error message reads:

Source: BINLSVC
Event ID: 1101

"An error occured during parsing of an .inf file netclass.inf in the given
section Manufacturer."

Believe it or not, I have been working this problem for at least 4 days and
I never thought to check the event log.

Well, I am going to try and research this some more but any suggestions on
what this might mean is again, greatly appreciated.

I'd check out that nic driver. Maybe on the server and maybe it's in the
$oem$ drivers folder if you made one.

You can try deleting all the *.PNF files in the
RemoteInstall\Setup\%language\Images\%dir_name%\i386 directory and let RIS
rebuild them by restarting the BINL and SIS Groveler, or better yet, restart
the RIS box.

Yes, you can delete all PNF files in the image folder. Windows will
recreate them.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the Manufacturer section.... I looked at a couple
of netclass.inf files and they had no Manufacturer section either. You
might need to check the nic manufacturer's web site for more info, maybe
there is a later driver.

Do you mean delete ALL .pnf files in the folder? Or just the ones that
pertain to the NIC?

Also, I did create a the $OEM$\$1\Drivers folder. Another thing, after
looking at the netclass.inf file located in the
RemoteInstall\Setup\%laanguage\Images\%dir_name%\i386 folder I noticed that
there was no [Manufacturer] section.

Might I have to actually create the section and insert some information?

Anyway thanks again.

I did delete all of the .pnf files, rebooted the RIS server but Windows did
not recreate them automatically. Prior to that I tried stopping and
restarting the BINLSVC and SIS Groveler services but that didn't work
either.

As for the NIC driver, I long ago downloaded the latest and greatest driver.

I am getting very weary. Thanks much for your help. I'll continue working
and let you know what I find.

OK, good luck. The PNF files will be recreated as needed when the RIS image
is requested by a client.
