Right mouse button freezes XP

When I press the right mouse button on the desktop my WinXP Home freezes. I
don't know exactly when the problem started but recently I have installed
AutoScreenRecorder Free edition. I also used Dexpot1.3 Free desktop manager
but the problem didn't stop when I removed it. What should I do?

Take a look at this MS article. See whether any of it applies to your particular case. Reply back here, either way.
Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015 (article published 15 Apr 2006)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

It could be that it does not apply, but you have a problem with the right-click context menu.
If that is so, then make a Save System Restore point on your system.

Then take a look at Kelly's XP Korner for a registry tweak.

Go to this webpage
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks2.htm

Then select the Fixes for XP. Next, look for "Restore the Right Click Context Menu".

As I stated, be sure to backup your registry files first.

This probably isn't what your problem is but once i had a similar problem
with my mouse. It turned out the mouse I was using was dirty and the button
got stuck every now and then which would freeze windows up completely. Was
really annoying and I didn't even think it could be the mouse itself, but it
was. Might be worth taking a close look at your mouse just in case it may
just need a little cleaning.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:

Right-click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled:

Thanks Maurice N,

Modified the registry according to the hint in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165
but it did NOT help.

The problem is linked to the security update MS06-015 and the file
VERCLSID.EXE . When I remove this process from Task Manager the right click
works once but when I try again the process is back! and the right click does
not work.

Now I have a temporary solution: I renamed the VERCLSID.EXE to VERCLSID.OLD
in the System32 folder.
....and wait for the permanent solution from MS.
any other ideas?
( I didn't try the Kelly's "Restore the Right Click Context Menu" yet. I'll
do it later.)

Hannu,

Regarding your right-click problem:

If you have an Nvidia graphics card on your computer, see if the computer also has Nview Destop context menu.
Get the "ShellEXView" utility from this link
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html .

Install it & run it to find out whether you have NView Desktop context menu.

If you do see it listed in ShellEXView, then "disable" it. Then see if your problems stop.

Post back to advise if this worked, or if you still have a problem.

Hello Maurice N

I tried this and it seems to work.
I indeed have the NView Desktop context menu. I disabled it and renamed the
verclsid back to .exe and even rebooted the computer. At least now it seems
to work. Thanks a lot!
But... What do I miss now when I disabled the NView?

There seems to be other people having the same problem.

Hannu
