"Right click, Manage" - missing on my computer

When I right click on the desktop icon "My Computer" I used to have a
"Manage" option. This no longer exists.

The Icon is the correct icon (i.e. not just a shortcut) when I Click
customise desktop from Display properties, if I un-tick my computer, the
icon from my desktop disappears (as expected) when I click it again it comes
back.

Manage is no longer there. Properties works OK - it takes me to the systems
properties.

Help....

Hi Julian,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Once there, delete the dword value listed as: NoManageMyComputerVerb

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for such a prompt reply. Unfortunately your solution did not solve
the problem. (There was no entry there to delete). Added information: This
missing option is not available on all the machines profiles. Even if I
create a brand new administrative user, the option is still missing. I make
the bold assumption is would have something to do with a missing csid
somewhere in the reg? but I have no idea....

so does start, run, compmgmt.msc still work, or has that gone too
(another way of getting to the same place). Are you an 'admin' user (not
sure that is necessary, but it might be).

The information Kelly gave you should be correct. But, if you're running XP
Pro, click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC Go to:

User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows
Explorer. Look in the right pane for Hides the Manage item on the Windows
Explorer context menu. Double click this item and make sure its set to Not
Configured.

GPEDIT.MSC is not available in XP Home.

I would try to run the mmc compmgmt.msc as mentioned
earlier. It should run.
I will stretch this a bit: Are there any new group
policies set on the machine? Is this machine a stand-
alone or part of a domain? If it is part of a domain,
then a domain policy may be set that is effecting the
machine.

Thanks Doug, The information Kelly did give me is correct, however it didn't
solve my problem. I followed your instructions and it is already configured
to Not Configured.

As I pointed out in my second post, Manage is missing from all user
profiles. Which is probably why this solution which only looks at User
Configuration is not working.

Any other ideas?

Hi Bill,

compmgnt.msc runs just fine, when I do a start run. I can even create a new
console and add the snap in.

This computer is not part of a domain. It is Windows XP pro. There are NO
policies set whatsoever. After reading all the posts I methodically went
through every setting (both computer and user) in gpedit.msc and ensured it
was set to Not Configured. (I didn't need to change any of them FYI) .

You know how you add Copy To and Move To in the context menu by adding the
csid's in the registry, I believe that something of someone maybe me? has
done the same thing for the Manage option in the context menu of My
Computer.

Hi GSV,

Start, Run compmgmt.msc still works. I can even to a plain mmc and add the
snap in (or all the individual ones if I like, they all work)

The user is a member of the Administrators group. Only. No other groups.

As stated previously, even when I log in with the original Administrator
account, the problem still persists.

Use the same key and value, but go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er

And look for the NoManageMyComputerVerb value. Either delete it, or set it
to 0.

Then you need to log off/log on, or end process on Explorer.exe in Task
Manager to make the change take effect.

OK, so it's just an access problem - try the fix Kelly suggested.
meantime, you at least have one way to run it. 8>.

Did u run the .reg fix?

Thanks Doug, tried what you suggested but it's still is not appearing.
Rebooted and still not there.

Do you perhaps know where the context menu for My Computer resides? In a
file or registry or...?

Thanks again Kelly, still no success.

Ran your script and received a "Restored" Message. Tried it then but still
not there. Rebooted and still not there.

Am now thinking it has something to do with Component services.. comexp.msc
... But not sure..

Also thank you for the CopyTo MoveTo tips. ( I was using them only for
comparison, not to actually apply, but thanks)

True - at least it's still running. I applied all of Doug's info and
Kelly's fix (undoing one before applying the other (even tho they are the
same)) and still no success.

It's not a major life threatening problem.. just a hassle.. I'm so used to
using Right Click Manage...

Thanks anyhows. :)

Ramesh, yes I have run the .reg fix with no success.
I've tried all the advice given here, with no success.... anything you have
to offer would be helpful too .

OK, I scanned my registry (where I'm sure it lives) and the only two
places the file name occurs are:

Key Name:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Mana
ge\command
Class Name: <NO CLASS>
Last Write Time: 23/01/2003 - 22:05
Value 0
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: %windir%\system32\mmc.exe /s
%windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc

and

Key Name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B
30309D}\shell\Manage\command
Class Name: <NO CLASS>
Last Write Time: 23/01/2003 - 22:05
Value 0
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: %windir%\system32\mmc.exe /s
%windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc

If you are missing either of those, let me know and I'll email them as a
mergable .reg file (I didn't post them that way since this is a non
binary NG, and some .reg files are not to be trusted).

Note that these were set up when WinXP/SP1 was installed, and have never
been changed since. This doesn't mean that there aren't other places in
the registry that =reference= the 'manage' command. 8>.

Added items are in the Registry, a number of places depending on which item.
But Manage, and others are built into the shell, so aren't "added".

Did you go into Task Manager and End Process on Explorer.exe? Or log off/on
or reboot?

Last but not least, try Start, Run and enter REGSVR32 /I SHELL32.DLL
