Right click egg timer ?

Please can anyone suggest what might be happening here.

Whenever i right click a file (or folder), say to check properties, the
little egg timer stays on for about 5 seconds then the context meny appears
as it should. Although this is not critical, it is very annoying for it to
take that long !.

Also, when i click on a jpeg, it takes about 5 seconds to open, sometimes
longer, no matter what file size/dimensions the picture is. The same
pictures on my work PC open up more or less within a second.

My computer is an Athlon 2200XP+, 620RAM, 80GB HD (with 56GB free space). I
regularly defrag (although XP tells me i don't need to), I have software to
clear internet junk files and clean the Hard Drive in general, so i cannot
imagine it would be purely down to clutter.

Is there anything i can 'tweak' here to try and get it running a little
faster. Are there any settings that i may have turned on by mistake, which
might be causing this to happen ?

Help !

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Wesley, i tried that but still no difference. Infact i disabled all
context menus, still slow. Must be something else.

Andy,

Try disabling the Icon handlers & Property Sheet handlers as well, to
isolate the problem.

Hello,

Good to hear from you.

According to your message, the issue seems to be caused by context menu
handlers. Please create a new user account to check. Does this issue occur
in the new account?

If the issue persists, we will troubleshoot it. Since you have tried the
steps Wesley suggested, please help me to gather the following information
for research.

Information 1: Registry Keys
=========================

Please export the following register keys in .reg format, archive them and
then send to (e-mail address removed):
HKCR\*, HKCR\AllFileSystemObjects, HKCR\Folder and HKCR\Directory.

The detailed steps to export the register key:
============================
1. Run "regedit" in the command box.

2. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

3. Select " * " and right click to select "Export".

4. Save as .reg type.

5. Winzip the four reg files and send them to (e-mail address removed) for
research.

Information 2: Screen shot
=========================

Please take a screen shot of the context menu when you right click a file
(or folder).

Information 3: System information
=============================

To save the system information file:
1. Click the Start-> Run->type"msinfo32"(without quotation marks)-> click
OK.
2. In the System Information window, click the File-> "Save..."

Information 4: Regmon
======================

Please download ntregmon in the following link and use the tool to do the
test.

Before you run Regmon.exe, it is recommended to read the Regmon.hlp first.
Please stop any other applications and do the following test.

1. Run Regmon.exe.
2. Use Ctrl+E to stop capture.
The default behavior is to capture information when you start the tool.
3. Use Ctrl+X to clear the information.
4. Use Ctrl+E to start capture.
5. Right click a file (or folder), and check properties.
6. Wait until the context menu appears.
7. Use Ctrl+E to stop capture.
8. Save the system information.
Click the menu "File", select "Save as" and save as type .log.

Also send the .log file to me.

Then we can see what can be done to help you. Troubleshooting may take some
time; your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.

Any update, let us get in touch.

Frances He

Sorry, yeah just realised what you mean. I have already done that through
'ShellEx' - infact i disabled everything in there. No luck, just the same.

Andy,

Is your system in a network (domain or a home network?)

Thanks Ramesh for taking the time to try and sort this.

No, no network here ! - Broadband, but no network.

I am running WinXP Pro, 620 RAM, Athlon 2200XP+ (1800GHz). I have another HD
as a backup, there are absolutely no problems with that one. I know if i do
a clean install then it will sort it, but i don't really fancy reformatting
!!

Thanks
Andy

No problem, Andy. Can you try what "Frances He" said and send the log file?
If you don't mind, CC the Log file to me my email address is (ramesh @ mvps
.. org ) Trim the spaces in my email id accordingly.

Pardon my ignorance, but who is Frances He ?, and what log file is it ?

Cheers
Andy

Ah, sorry, i don't seem to have seen that post. Yes, i'll give his
suggestion a go, Thanks again Ramesh for your valuable help in this.

Cheers
Andy
