I Have run the DATA BASE programme Bird Recorder for 15 years. It now fails
to start. You get the egg timer for 15 seconds then nothing.
I Know reinstall.
But setup.exe also fails to run.
Same thing, egg timer for 15 seconds then nothings.
Bird recorder last run about 4 weeks ago.
Since then Several programmes uninstalled, pictures removed to create more
space on Drive C. Then defragmented and sorry no restore.
I seriously do not wish to loose 15 years of records.
I have thought the Birdwin.exe might require a support file. (Also
setup.exe). VBRun300 and 200 are still there. Is there anything else anyone
can tell me that might be required.

Cheers

db

it might have a
problem with the
net frameworks.

instead of trying
to figure out what
is the problem,

a suggestion would
be to:

install the operating
system that the database
was designed for.

you mention 15 years
so I can assume the
operating system the
db was designed for
was perhaps for win 95.

now what you can do
is to go to microsoft.com
and install virtual pc.

then install win 95 in
virtual pc.

then install your db
program in the virtual
win 95.

the other choice is to
skip virtual memory
and install the old o.s.
on a slave drive and
dedicate it for your
database.

I think however, virtual
pc would be a better
option because the
newer operating
system will provide
provide some advantages
that the older os cannot.

------------

I never heard of the db
you mentioned.

15 years ago I was building
in a db called qa4.

If you have the program disk that should identify the supplier
And if you visit that sofware suppliers site, do they have an update for a
latter version?
Do you know which file is the data file, and if so what is its suffix?

about bird recorder
because a birdy

First of all thanks to you all. This is my first visit to the site and I am
totally impressed with the response.
Both the setup programme and the main programme are 16bit programmes. Thus
the 16bit interpreter is required. In both cases it starts and then hogs the
CPU time even although "nothing" is happening.
When I run an even older DOS programme, which uses the same interpreter,
the CPU time fall to zero when the dos programme is doing nothing.
(I have tried to go back to a 2002 version of the interpreter but the 2008
version keeps coming back - like a bad smell. )
My conclusion is that the programme is looking for a file. I eventually got
through to the supplier. This is x generations away from their current
offering and he could offer no help. BUT he has offered to translate all my
records into the new format if I purchase their latest version. ($100)
Life being short that seems like the way forward.
So thanks again.

Undoubtably the best way forward
Even running old apps in compatibility mode can sometimes fail, after some
other update
And if this app stores data in a universal data format as apposed to custom
format you should be able to extract the data. When you get the new app you
might want to check as to if there is any db export option, eg to csv format
