I've been having problems with a few programmes like Microsoft Frontpag
for example - it does work but I have to wait for 15 minutes after
click on one thing so it would literally take a whole day to ge
something done. I've also recently downloaded Photoshop CS and I'v
been having the same problem but only worse. Most of the time th
programme would freeze the computer and I would then have to restart.
I am not so sure what is wrong with what. I would appreciate any hel
and advice from this forum very much.

Many thanks!

Dear Natasha

Forgive me for asking but did the download of new software comply with
the copyright owners practices and policies?

Or was it an OEM download or really good value 90% reduction in cost
download?

Natasha

What anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes are you using? Is the
Windows XP SP2 update installed?

How much RAM memory? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and
select the
Performance Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak?

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on the
drive, right click and select Properties.

Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Run Disk
Defragmenter by selecting
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Look in Event Viewer for Error Reports on the System tab since
immediately before the problem arose and post copies of any marked Error
( not Warning or ?).

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Thank you kindly for the help Gery Cornell and Deebs.

@ Deebs - if you mean to ask whether I bought the programmes or are
they downloaded illegally/pirated or not - no they aren't. I bought
those programmes, installed them from the CD-ROM. Still wondering what
could be the problem though - all other programmes works fine except
for those two. Photoshop CS and Microsoft Frontpage. I have my Paint
Shop Pro 8 and 9 and Photoshop Elements working properly right now.

@ Gery Cornell - I checked the event viewer and there are various
errors and warnings - in fact, lots of them. I don't know which one to
pick and report really. These are print-screens of the Windows Task
Manager and C Drive property report. I've just done Disk Cleanup and I
will do the Disk Defragmenter soon. I have Spyware Blaster, Spyware
Guard, Spybot -Search and Destroy.

An obvious problem is the amount of free space on your hard disk. You
only have 7.38% free space on your hard disk. You need 15% to 20%!

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure
that you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options,
View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden
files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You
should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known
file types" is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View,
Details is selected and then select View, Choose Details and check
before Name, Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Download Dirsize.dll plugin and place the file in Windows\System32
folder. Select Start, Run and type "regsvr32 dirsize.dll" without the
quotes and hit ENTER.

Next in Windows Explorer open a folder and set it to Detail view. From
the View menu,
click Choose Details. Put a checkmark near Folder Size, and click OK.
Use CTRL and + key (Numeric Keypad) combination to resize the column
width, so that the Folder Size column is displayed correctly.

To apply this setting for all the folders, click Tools, Folder
Options. In the View tab and click Apply to all folders.

You can download Dirsize from: http://markd.mvps.org/

We can most likely create extra free space by a number of measures.

You can limit the disk space used by System Restore. Right click on the
My Computer icon on your Desktop and select, Properties, System Restore,
Settings. This will give you the amount of Disk Space allocated to
System Restore in terms of % of size of Drive and megabytes or
gigabytes. The default maximum is 12%, which is often excessive. You can
move the slider to the left to reduce the size of the allocation. Once
the allocated space is fully taken the oldest restore point is removed
when a new restore point is created ( or it should be ). If yours is set
to 12% it is 6.7 gb and I would reduce it to 5% i.e. 2.8 gb.

Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files.

Delete all but the most recent Restore Point ( Start, Programs,
Accessories, System
Tools, Disk Cleanup, More options).

Run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs, Accessories,
System
Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on the
C
drive, right click and select Properties.

What anti-virus and email programmes are you using.

How much RAM memory do you have? Right click on the My Computer icon on
your Desktop and select Properties.
Near the bottom of the page you will see ??? of RAM.

Thanks Gerry for the reply. I already did the disk defragmenting - took
me almost a whole day. Also Disk Cleanup - I've also deleted some of my
unnecessary files.

I also have downloaded and done what you have instructed with the
dirsize.dll - is that just to view details of my files? Pardon my
ignorance but I'm not sure what that will do.

Also if I move the slider down from the 12% maximum - will that delete
my files automatically?

In answer to your questions:

It's NTFS and 1.70 GHz - 512 RAM

Local Disk (C:) - 55.7 GB and Free Space 15 GB

Many thanks,

Natasha
