Reverse/Stop beginning of XP-installation

I tried using my XP-disk to "Repair" (checkdisk/scan) my hard drive but a new
installation of XP started. I immediately switched off the PC to stop the
process but now when I start-up again, it starts the "new installation". Is
there a way for me (via DOS or anything!) to stop this installation and just
go back to the original state?
Or can I somehow access some of my files on C:\ and back it up...to some
place!
Any advice will be much appreciated!!!
