Retrieving auto-archived emails

I use Outlook 2000.

I inadvertently auto-archived.

I was half-successful in reversing the process, pulling the archive back in
using:

File -> Open -> Personal Folders File - Archive

This created (as least I don't recall it existing before) an "Archive
Folders" file in my file structure on the left side of the screen, with two
sub-files: "Sent Items" and "Deleted Items". My archived sent items were in
the first one, but the second one was empty. Are my deleted items gone
forever?

I have searched my entire hard-drive for "*.pst" files, and found none
elsewhere.

Look at the properties of your main Deleted Items folder and check the
AutoArchive tab...see if they are set to permanently delete rather than going
to a file. Why are you saving items in Deleted Items anyway? It should
never be used for long term storage -- it's intended to allow you to recover
something you deleted accidentally, within a reasonable amount of time.

Enable searching within hidden folders to find all possible .PST files, as
Windows 2000 and later Windows versions put Outlook files in hidden folders.
Perhaps you will find one that has more of your data.

Thanks Jocelyn. It was set to "permanently delete". Ouch! I'd been using
Deleted Items as an "Old Emails In Box" to keep my In Box managable.

I hope you don't use your wastebasket as an additional file cabinet.

Much better to either set the Deleted Items folder to AutoArchive to the
Archive file every day, or even better, to create another folder to put these
items in (and set it to archive every so often) and only put items you truly
want to delete in Deleted Items.
