retrieve files from backup dvd

I have a new HP, less than 2 months old, that has daily problems. The
operating systems is Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I backed up the data on DVD
using backup and restore center.

After making that back up the bios of the machine was updated and then a
full system recovery was done.

The computer no longer recognizes the backup DVDs as coming from this
computer.

When i attempt to restore I have tried using backup from another computer.
when I do so I can see the files I want to recover. However, when it comes
time to recover the instructions ack for a backup disk dated the day prior to
the day I did my backup. It reads the correct date on the DVD for the actual
date of back up and then indicates this is not an appropriate file.

At this point I would be happy with recovering only Word and Excel files.

I have spent several hours with HP Chat people who keep telling me to simply
use the Back Up and Restore Center by making selections that I remind them
are not available to me because the computer does not recognize this as a
backup from this machine.

I would appreciate any assistance. 3-5 of the files are extremely
important, and that is why I had backed them up.

Thank you,

Hi Joyy,

did the backup span multiple dvds at backup time? if so - then, there is
chances that file that you are trying to recover lies on the first dvd.

you can see the whole list of files in the backup from second dvd (in case
backup spanned two dvds). but to recover a file which was backed up on first
dvd - you will need first dvd.

secondly - you can browse the <machine-name> folder under the dvd drive on
the dvd. you will find some zip files under it. you can open them in
explorer and see you find your files. backup are done in .zip format - which
can be explorered in explorer. Please see whether your needed files exist in
the zip files on the dvd.

Thank you for your advice.
There re two DVDs for this backup. However, I get the same error message
for both.

I have tried to find the zipped files containing the files that I want.
There are 39 zipped folders. Unzipping most results in empty subfolders.

I will look again this evening per your suggestions. Thank you.
