I just learned that when one wants to retain the original date on a document
to be saved that one must do this at the original date. However, is there
any way to retrieve documents and preclude the date changing automatically to
today's date? I am doing a massive data retrieval of old docs. and all my
dates are showing today's date!

If you mean dates that have been inserted using DATE fields, if you just
want to see the dates as they were when you saved the document, your best
bet is probably
a. create a new blank document.
b. instead of opening the file you want to see, insert it using
Insert->File, if you are using Word 2003 or earlier, or in Word 2007 use
Insert->Object dropdown (in the Text group)->Text from file

Don't print or print preview as that will probably update your fields.

If your document contains a DATE field, Alt+F9 to view it, then change DATE
to CREATEDATE. F9 to update, and it will show the creation date instead of
the current date.
