retain chart colors when pasting from Excel to Powerpoint

I am attempting to paste Excel (office 07) charts into my Powerpoint (Office
07) presentation.The chart data/titles/legend/etc. paste fine, but all the
data bars are assigned new colors in the process.
I am unable to find any way to retain the exact configuration of my chart
from one application to the other.
Even worse, my Powerpoint only displays one selection of "Themed colors" in
the Chart Tools.
I cannot conceive that this is by design, but I'm sure not finding a way to
change it and I'm unable to find any assistance in the Help files.
All assistance greatly appreciated.

Are you using the same theme colors in both the PPT file and the Excel file?

Or did you apply direct formatting to the chart colors in Excel?
