i'm wondering if there is any way to restrict who uses the internet on a
particular machine. my neighbor wants to be able to restrict how much his
daughter uses the internet by password protecting it. is win xp able to do
this natively? is there a better solution to the problem?

You really can not do that with the operating system very easily. If they are
using a cable modem, there are nat/routers such as those you can get at Best Buy
that can control internet access based on a schedule [check before you buy], but
that will apply to all users and the device can be easily reset by anybody if
they can get access to it or bypass it. There are companies that market personal
firewalls that can control access to the internet based on the logged on user
and can even go by schedule. PortsLock is one such product and can be tried for
free. ---Steve

Hey there,

Portslock is alright... another piece of software you could use is
Browse Control, i used this at my company and it can be used at
home... You can turn the net on/off and also white list sites that u
do want the little girl to be able to visit. U also can block
applications that you don't want her using. Pretty easy and
straightforward and also offering a free trial...
