Restoring IE desktop icon associations

Several months ago, I installed Foxfire for my default browser, but I later
needed to remove it to help troubleshoot several problems on my system.
Since I completely removed it, IE will start okay, but when I click on a
desktop internet shortcut, I get a warning message stating the file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. It also states
that I need to create an association in the folder options control panel.

I thought that I went into the folder options - file associations - and
changed the "HTML" and "HTM" files to open with IE and that everything would
be fine, but I still have the same problem.

I was wondering if there a few other things to check or correct? Or, is
there a program that will fix or correct IE's file associations?

Right click on the Desktop Internet Explorer Icon and choose Properties.
Click on the Shortcut tab. The target should read: "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"

Try this...

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button |
Place checkmark in Internet Explorer | OK | Apply | OK | Right click new
IE icon | Properties | Reset Web Settings button | Check: Internet
Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser | Apply | OK

[[Click Reset Web Settings button to reset the default Internet Explorer
settings for your home and search pages, and prompt to make Internet
Explorer your default browser.
Note: This only resets these settings if you have installed another Web
browser after installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, and that
browser has changed the default settings.]]

[[ Internet Explorer should check ... Specifies whether you want Internet
Explorer to remain your default Internet browser, even if you install
additional Internet browsing software.
When this check box is selected, each time Internet Explorer starts it
checks to make sure it is still registered as the default Internet browser.
If another program is registered as the default browser, Internet Explorer
asks whether you want to restore Internet Explorer as your default
browser.]]
