Not Remembering File Associations

Windows XP refuses to remember file associations. Despite the fact that I
have clearly associated .mp3 (for example) with WMP, every time I
double-click on an mp3 file, I have to pick WMP and check the 'Always use the
selected program...' check box...every time. This happens with other file
types, also. I've check the extensions in the registry and they are properly
associated with WMP. I've tried deleting and restoring the association...no
luck. Still have to check the box. This seems to have come on quite
suddenly and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to fix it. I've
tried using a file association utility (Associate This) with no luck. I'd be
most grateful for any guidance or insight anyone can provide. Many thanks.

Start, Run

wmplayer /regserver

This did not fix the problem. When I run the regserver command, WMP opens
(not sure why). I close it, double-click on an mp3 file, and I still have to
select WMP and check the 'Always use this program...' box. Most frustrating.
I'll double-check with other file types to see if they were fixed with the
regserver approach. Again, any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure how it broke in the first place, but I seem to have fixed the
problem. Even though WMP showed that media files were associated with it, I
unchecked all file associations in WMP options, exited the program,
re-started WMP, and re-checked all file associations. This seems to have
corrected the problem. Certainly something to remember for the future.
