Restoring Files From Automatic Backup On New Installation

Just wondering if it's possible to restore files on a new installation
of Vista. Take this scenario, I back up my media files to a separate
disk D:\. For some reason, my C:\ completely fails. Therefore, I must
install Vista on a new drive.

Can I then restore my files from the previously installed Windows?

Yes or no, it depends. If you have backed up the files on D: and then when
you re-install windows on D: the answer would be no because windows will
discard those files during the installation, but if you re-install on another
drive besides the one(D:) where you backed up your files then the answer is
yes because windows won't mess with files on another drive.
