Vista Complete Backup and Restore - not able to restore

J

Jim

Well, the unthinkable happened, I had a very serious event which has caused
me to try and use my backup in order to restore to a previous state. - Ain't
happening.

Please help.

1) I have a dual-boot Vista/XP Pro system.
2) Contains 3 160GB internal physical drives.
3) Contains 4 partitions (primary is dual partition for Vista and XP Pro)
4) Has one 1.5TB external SATA Backup drive.

Problem:
1. Performed Complete System Backup one month ago.
2. Install of Windows XP Pro MS update failed with Blue Screen failure (x0D)
which seems to indicate a video driver problem (no issues on Vista Side).
3. Unable to use any recovery method to startup/repair XP Pro side (Safe
Mode works).

Need:
1) How to restore from Windows Vista x64 Business Complete System Backup
only the partition for Windows XP Pro?

Findings:
A) No recovery functions either recognize external SATA Drive as my backup
medium, or no options offered on the Restore Screen in Windows Backup window.
B) Apparently the .vhd files are not true virtual drives and can't be
mounted using MS Virtual product (this was tried to see if files were
recognized.)

If any one knows how to use the Backup product provided by Microsoft please
let me know - otherwise it is useless and I'll have to resort to
reinstallation of Windows XP Pro - then by a product that actual works as a
backup/restore product.

Windows complete system backup is not designed for partial restores. You
would be advised to obtain Terrabytes BootItNG for backing up or many like
Acronis products for backup, but I have found their support lacking. Your
problem is still being reported in the Windows 7 groups so the problem is
still not solved.
