Restore Complete BackUp?

I did a complete backup with Windows Vista Ultimate and saved it on
"D" drive formated with NTFS.
I was working to try and get a dual boot system with Xp Pro as the
other operating system.
Thats when things went "North". So I reformated the "C" dirve and
started Vista and when it got to repair and brought up the restore
screen, I then selected the complete system restore but Vista's menu
was blank. It couldn't find it.
So I reinstalled Vista on "C" drive and tried to restore it from
there, all to no avail.
Is there any way I can get this thing to restore the fies located on
drive "D"?
Thanks for you help and time!!

Is "D" a seperate hard disk, or a 2nd partition on the main drive?
If it is a seperate drive, does it need a driver installing?
If it is USB, Vista should see it at the repair screen.

Yes, No, No driver needed. No, its not a usb drive and it is formated
to NTFS.
I thought it should see it also but it doesn't. If you got to put your
backup on the same drive, it wouldn't serve much use should the drive
crash.
This one has me stumped but good.
Vista does see the repair screen but there is nothing there to
indicate I even have a backup file on drive "D". Strange!!
Thanks:

No you don't have to put the backup on the same disk.
I used Ultimate image backup lots of times with usb hard disks without
problems.
Could bitlocker be active or something like that?
Not sure if that would affect it.
