Restore from backup Vista 32bit

If I need to do a restore from backup, how do I do it? Vista 32bit backup
is not a disc image backup (like Vista64), rather backs up select files. I
have read the Vista help and it is extremely lacking in answering obvious
questions. The obvious question I cannot find the answer in vista help,
doing a restore from a backup, do I install all my software first and then
restore the back-up files or do I do it vise versa?

People have pointed me to Vista64 help sites for answers to my questions. I
am sure they have good information but, if I understand it correctly, the
backup on Vista 32bit is significantly different than Vista64. Is there a
good tutorial out there on Vista 32bit restore?

How does Vista 32bit backup handle encrypted files from truecrypt? Does it
backup and restore it ok?

Background info: I have a AMD 4400+ 64X2 4GB memory 320GB HD(way bigger than
I need) Acer computer (AM3100-U3201A) I purchased new February 2008 running
32-bit MS Vista Home Premium SP2 box. I use MS auto updates. I think it
has onboard shared memory for video and sound. My ISP is Comcast 12mbps
with Motorola SURFboard SB5101 Cable Modem direct to computer. No other
switches or routers or wireless or phone line or any other networking
hardware hooked up to this computer.

Thank You

In order to restore Vista 32 backup you need Vista 32 installed
In order to un-encrypt files that you encrypted with "Truecrypt" you need
the program installed so that you can un-encrypt the backup files and then
restore.,
unless you encrypted and then backed up then you need to restore first.

Which is why a lot of us use Acronis True Image and create an Image
of the HD. Using the Acronis Emergency start up CD we can easily restore the
image back to the HD without having to install an operating system 1st.

That should be no problem. I have copied TrueCrypt files to a new
computer and had no difficulty mounting the copy.

Of course, I'm presuming that Vista 32 bit BU would end up restoring a
verbatim copy of the original file, so that BU/Restore would be just
like copying a file. If not, the BU software is seriously diseased :)
