I have an acer laptop .Aspire 5100. It has Windows xp.. Acer gives you a program with it to take your computer back to when it was as if you just bought it. I was wondering if anyone has used that option. I have and it deleted everything on the laptop except for the operating system. That is what I wanted but how do I make sure that none of the things I don't want on there is in fact off of there?? I do know that at some point it had to me that it will overwrite on there and also there is now a second partition. how do I know that it is not in fact in the first partition??

TBH I never use a System restore / Factory restore utility.
Unfortunately there seems to be too much bloat ware etc.
I download the drivers then re-install the O/S etc.

The only sure way of achieving what you ask is to remove the hard drive and use a hammer to destroy it? there is always a way to recover deleted files even after a complete re-install old files can still be found [fact] as for the partition that is there for a reason?

Oh by the way Hiya:wave:

The othe rpartition you talk about is what holds all the information for the restoration back to an original factory default

however its all crap and as Jaling has said its always better to do a complete installation of an operating system anyway

however on a prebuilt and installed computer the problem will be you never get and operating system disk with them always a restore option which in my opinion is a rip off. If you pay for an operating system to be supplied with your computer you shoudl get the full installation disk not a lame excuse restoration cd

Well with all that being said. Is there anyway to check the hard drive to see exactly what is on it. Like maybe somehow going to dos or is there another way???I am just curious as to what remains on it. As I said when I used the Acer restore it had told me that it is overwriting what was on the disc and to me that everything was taken off.

You could get the HDD sent off to a specialist company to see whats on it, but that costs ££££!
Normally system restore deletes everything!!

As Triplex says, the partition you can now see is the Acer recovery partition..Nothing much to see on there realy, just a bunch of recovery files etc...The sh*ty thing is you can't delete it either..It is locked by Acer..No amount of reformatting will ever shift it..Unless you have enough money to purchase FBI like software..
In short live with it, the partition shouldn't be more than 2 gig anyway, and one day you might actually be glad that it is there..Take is from an ex Acer employee..
