I created a back up disk on an old machine. I thought I restore the old
machine...but no such luck. Now, I bought a new machine...and I have this
huge .dat file (which I think consists of my old files) - how do I download
all or some of the .dat file? I have pics on it...that I really want to
restore.

tks,
Chris

It would depend on what software you used to create the backup, but it is
highly unlikely that
you can use the backup on a new machine due to the difference in hardware,
etc.

You should have backed up the photos to a cd as photos. Using a backup
program to preserve photos is not very efficient, and as you have learned if
the original computer has gone belly up, you cannot restore them.
