Restore will not restore

I've got a problem with WindowsXP Restore and I can't seem
to find the answer. The Restore appears to be tracking
restore points but when it comes time to do an actual
restore and a restore point is selected the "Next" button
gets a dotted line on it and eventually clears but nothing
happens.

I attempted a refresh installation of system restore by
going to Windows\inf\sr.inf and right clicking on it and
select install. It then went through an installation
process and asked for the following files that it could
not find: (some of these files would not show up when
using the "Search" process.)

sr.sys - which was found in
c:/windows/system32/drivers/sr.sys
srclient.dll - which was found in c:/windows/system32
filelist.xml - which was found in
c:/windows/system32/restore/filelist.xml
rstrui.exe - which was found in
c:/windows/system32/restore/rstrui.exe
srframe.mmf - which was found in
c:/windows/system32/restore/srframe.mmf

After all of the files were located and installed during
the automated installation process an error message came
up at the end and said the installation failed. I'd sure
like to get my restore working again and I'd appreciate
any help anyone could provide.

I would also like to be able to send messages to a forum
but I'm not sure of how to sign up and to which forum I
should use.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You should take a look at this page. I did not see your problem stated
explicitly, but there is a lot of material you can look over. Choose the
letter S, and page down to System Restore:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

PS: Not sure exactly what you meant about forums, but you will do a lot
better if you used Outlook Express to access the newsgroups. The format is
easier to use and looks better. You can sort, search, delete, highlight,
etc. For more info:
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx
and follow through there to Outlook Express and its TELL ME HOW, to get to a
comprehensive tutorial.

Restore is not reliable. It's a marketing gimmick for MS.
You can turn it off from Control Panel > System > and then
re-boot and it will purge it's file. Then re-boot, turn it
back on.

You still have to deal the problem, it's a crap program,
that half works, half the time. It's like a parachute,
will it open if you need it ?? Maybe !!! It is not
isolated from any viruses and must be purged to keep from
a re-infection. If you use it, fine, Have I, yes !!! But I
learned the hard way about it's reliability, it can't be
trusted !!I It's too easy to use NTBack-up to back up your
system state, but not to a cd, cause that's another issue.
Save it to a folder then burn it. Oh, I forgot you may
have to install NTBackup since MS decided you did not need
it in XP Home, that 75% of users have. Oh, you have a OEM
and you don't have NTBackup Get it here :
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Do a real backup and get Erunt for your registry. It puts
a folder on your root dir with a installer.

If you're a true MS believer, Keep drinking the purple
cool-aid, the hale-bop comet is returning, they have room
for you !!

System Restore :: In MS's own words .......lol

"The System Restore feature of Windows XP enables you to
restore a PC, in the event of a problem, to a previous
state without losing personal data files. System Restore
actively monitors system file changes to record or store
previous versions before the changes occurred. With System
Restore, you never have to think about taking system
snapshots as it automatically creates easily identifiable
restore points, which allow you to restore the system to a
previous point in time."

"you never have to think about taking system snapshots"
Oh, really.

Thanks much for the info - my experience
with WinXP Home has not been that favorable. It is a lot
better that Win98SE as far as eliminating blue screens but
the installation process created a lot of problems with
sound cards, program incompatibility, lack of co-operation
from other Software Companies in providing either Driver
support or assistance with their products to get them to
work with XP. Many of them want you to buy their latest
software (Roxio as an example) rather than spend a few
bucks on providing driver updates.

Again - thanks for your help. I'll give all of y our
suggestions a try and hopefully I'll get something to
work. On Win98se I had go-back and that was a life saver
in being able to return to a pre-installation time on new
software installs.

ATB (All the best)

Thanks for such a prompt response. You're
right....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm is a
really great site and even if I don't find the answer
to "Restore's" problem I'm sure that site will be helpful
for many other problems that I'll encounter down the
road. Thanks for your quick response and help.

the issue I was having with forums (I probably used the
incorrect terminology) was with attempting to sign up for
a .NET Passport account. As part of the registration
process it requires the person signing up for an account
to retype a series of letters and numbers in order to
discourage attackers who use harmful programs to try to
register multiple accounts with a Web service, like .NET
Passport. I correctly typed the letters and numbers in
the manner required, hit enter (next) and I was presented
with another set of numbers and letters to repeat by
typing them in the required space. This went on for about
5 attempts and then I gave up. Anyway, there are probably
a number of sites like Kelly's that will provide the type
of information that I need.

Again - thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

The equivalent to Go-Back in XP is: System Restore.
To run it, got to Help and Support, and type "system restore." Choose the
option with the wizard. Very easy, and a lifesaver.

Right - I understand the function of Restore. My original
problem is that "Restore" will not "Restore". Windows XP
will not handle "GoBack" from Win98 CD provided by Gateway.

I downloaded and attempted to install NTBackup but got an
error message that NTBackup.cab file is corrupt. I have
never installed Win NT on my computer so I'm not sure if
the corrupt file is in the download or the fact that there
is no NTBackup.cab file for the download to reference.

Thanks for the continued help.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded ERUNT but I'm not sure
I can handle it. I'll give NTBackup a try. Many thanks
again for your help.
