System Restore won't run

Fred S *****

Hi,

Working on my daughter's laptop and tried to run System Restore.

An error message pops up saying the file cannot be found yet it points
to the correct folder;

C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

If I use Windows explorer and go to that folder and double click on
rstrui.exe, the same popup message appears. It says it cannot locate the
file and I should try using the "Search" to locate it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Fred

Glee,

The error message says:

"Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe" Make sure
you typed the name correctly and try again."

And as I noted below the file is there. Also, when I double click it,
the same error pops up.

Fred
You did not supply the exact error message in its entirety, so unless
there are mind readers available, no one knows what your error is and
where to point you.

Here is a list of some System Restore error messages:

If you don't find yours there, try asking here:

Fix File Associations. Try the .exe fix.

Check that there is a copy of rstrui.exe in the hidden folder,
Windows\system32\dllcache
(You will have to set your Folder Options settings to show all hidden and system
files).

If there is a copy there, go to the Windows\System32\restore folder and delete
rstrui.exe, then reboot, allowing Windows to replace it with the copy in the
dllcache folder.

Does it still not work?

Follow the step-by-step methods here:
Troubleshooting steps for issues when you try to use the System Restore tool in
Windows XP

Be sure to try the last one, to start the computer in Safe Mode and try System
Restore from there. Do you get the same error in Safe Mode?

Try System Restore from a Safe Mode Command Prompt:

Also check the system for malware (spyware, trojans):

Was a virus, trojan or spyware recently removed from the system?

Glen,

Thanks for the ideas. I have some traveling to do and will need a few
days before I can try these suggestions, but I will do so and will
followup here later.

Her system was infected with a Trojan but removed and the system is now
clean. I turned SR off (to delete a few infections) then turned it back
on after boots between. SR did NO work before nor does it now.

I'll check back in a few days.

Thanks, Fred
