RESTORE REMAINS LOCKED IN WINDOWS XP (HOME) AFTER AUTO UPDATE

A recent MS auto update failed. I tried to restore to the previous state but
restore is appears locked.(Error 1359).

I have done thorough anti virus and malware check. I have also checked
Registry
settings and all other settings to confirm that restore is set ON. Services
shows system restore is set to automatic but stopped. (Cross deadhead
locking?)
However it will not allow a manual start but quotes error 1359. Any
sugestions anybody or do I have to do a reinstall? Will it automatically
reset the next time there is an auto update if I just wait??

you can repair the windows system files without damaging the other files and
programs.

if you want to try this, bootup with windows cd, select setup, select new
installation, select repair current installation.....

Hi,

If the steps below don't help. Try reinstalling System Restore.
Tips Fixes & FAQs - How to reinstall System Restore:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html

Go to Start - Run and type regedit then press enter.

Navigate to the following registry Key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore

In the right pane, right click on each of these Value Keys and select
delete.

"DisableSR"
"DisableConfig"

Close Regedit. Right click on My Computer and select the System Restore
tab. A reboot may be necessary.

If the above doesn't fix the issue, there's a registry edit at Kelly's
Korner.

Look on line 278 left side.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

These steps, and registry fix are also known to repair the inability to
enable System Restore after it has been turned off.

Many thanks for your help. Followed advice about registry and now have
Restore working again. However, a problem which I thought was connected to
restore problem still exists and so presumably is a different problem. When I
resume from Hibernation everything is normal until the "restore" phase is
complete but then just a blank screen.

Grateful for any further ideas anybody.

Many thanks--

Hi,

When you say "restore phase is complete" are you referring to the
hibernation or System Restore?

Hi Bert,

Help appreciated. I actually mean when the awaking from hibernation phase is
complete. That is to say that I can see the normal activity bar incrementing
across the screen as it awakes and restores from hibernation and when it is
complete I have just a blank grey screen. No amount of key fiddling.
ctl/alt/del, etc will make it do anything. I have to resort to power off at
the power socket and reboot from square one. Have again checked viruses,
malware, registry checks etc and have got nowhere. All other aspects of
computer APPEAR to be normal. Have checked video settings but nothing apprs
there either.

Hi again,

Many thanks for your suggested link. Followed reccommended actions and had
partial success only. I now get a restored window on resume for 50% of
attempts but the whole screen/computer is frozen, often with no cursor either!

Will continue researching for a solution. If all else fails I will try a
re-install but don't want to if I can avoid it.

many thanks again Bert
