restore points

I used to get automatic restore points almost every 3
days...this month windows did not create 1 except one
before installing the latest sec.update. Could it be
broken? Once the specified reserved amount of disk space
for the restore points is reached...will the oldest be
deleted or does it stop to create automatic points?

I know I can try to turn off and delete the old points and
turn it back on, but I would like to keep my old restore
points.

If the system is not idle long enough, it's possible to miss a few
automatic updates. You can create a restore point manually whenever you
want. Also, only some installations will create restore points.

I've gotten into the habit of creating one manually before any system
change/installation. If it ends up the installation creates one too, I have
a duplicate but don't mind. Would rather have 2 similar restore points for
a system change instead of none.

The older restore points are kicked out to make room for the new.

I like System Restore and have used it on occasion to reverse changes to my
setup. However, it is best for repairs in the short term. It really is not
designed to reverse long term changes or damage.

For anything longer than a week (two at most), I prefer to restore Windows
from an image file. I use Image for Windows to create bootable DVDs that
can get my system back up to a working configuration in less than 30
minutes. Similar software that can accomplish the same is Symantec's Ghost
or Drive Image and Acronis' True Image.

Info and a downloadable trial for Image for Windows can be found here:
