Restore not Working??

Although not used often, my System Restore has gone AWOL on me. I recently
tried to check that updates were being made. When I clicked on Restore from
the Help menu – it just said that “System Restore Application has encountered
a problem and needs to closeâ€.

Now, a couple of months ago I added an additional hard drive to my computer
and changed the original HD file system to NTFS from FAT 32 using Partition
Magic.

I am thinking that that may have something to do with System Restore’s
troubles. Anyone else have a similar problem? Everything else on the computer
seems to be working well.

Any help is appreciated – I’d sure like to get it working before I really
need it!

You restore files are corrupted and the only thing you can do is turn off
restore, reboot and turn it back on. Then set a new restore point.

Thanks for your responses!

Mary - I can't get near the settings for restore - just clicking the link
throws it in to the error dialog box - no settings to change! Thisi has
occurred over several weeks with many opportunities for the restore points to
be reset.

LFR - SAFE MODE - Tried it (Good idea) but no joy.

Plato - Again this has been happening over several weeks that I noticed it,
with many opportunities for new restore points to be set. Just rebooting
hasn't worked.

Wow - I got it back! Thank you for your help. One of the posts on another
"lost restore" query directed the writer to a great site with lots of system
restore information, including how to reinstall the system restore. Its at:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

I ended up reinstalling my my system restore function by following the
instructions below - took about 45 seconds!! You do lose all your stored
restore points - but if it ain't working anyway - - -

I wanted to post a resolution because many times people follow a thread but
don't know what solved the problem - so here it is!

How do I reinstall System Restore?

Warning: This will delete ALL existing restore points.

Go to Start - Run and type %Windir%\INF then press enter.

In Windows Explorer go to Tools - Folder Options - View Tab and uncheck
“Hide extensions for known file typesâ€.

Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Or simply type or paste the following command into the Start - Run box and
press enter.

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf

If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to the i386
folder on the Windows XP CD or to the i386 folder on the hard drive, if it
exists, of for systems updated with the Service Pack 2 CD or Download from
Microsoft, browse to the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.

Thanks again for this informative site.
