Horrible error messages.

I recently did a “System Restore†on my computer (which runs WindowsXP). Now
every time I boot up I get two error dialogue boxes. One says in the top bar
“Microsoft .NET Frameworkâ€, then below that “An unhandled exception has
occurred in a component in your application. Click continue and application
will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.†Then there are
“Details†and “Continue†buttons.

The second error box says “Windows Installer†in the top bar. Below, it says
“The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk
that is not available.â€

Below that I’ve received various messages: One says “Insert the ‘TrayApp’
disk and click OKâ€. To the right are “OK†and “Cancel†buttons. Below that
in the box is another option headed “Use source:†with “Browse†to the right
of that. The “Use source†box initially has only “1" inside.

Another time the message was “Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate
path to a folder containing the installation package ‘setup.msi in the box
below.†Then of course I had the same buttons and box.

The “Microsoft .NET Framework†box can be moved, but absolutely will not be
removed, and cannot be made to move to the background. “Windows Task Managerâ€
doesn’t even show it. With “Windows Installerâ€, I can remove it with “Task
Managerâ€, but any little cursor action brings it right back.

I’d try another “System Restoreâ€, but my computer is so screwed up that only
the month of August is available, and I’ve tried every available restore
point in August.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup.

What problems were you having that you thought using System Restore might
resolve?

Or are you referring to a system Recovery (i.e., returning the computer to
OOE state)?

Thanks for the reply, Pa Bear. I looked in "System Information" and found "OS
Name: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition". If there's any further descriptive
info than that, I don't know where to find it.

The problems I described seemed to come about after I loaded Logitech
QuickCam and Skype, but System Restore didn't solve the problems.

Is System Recovery a viable option? I can find no mention of it in Help and
Support Center.

Right-click on My Computer | select Properties | The full Windows version
will be displayed on the resulting General tab.

Did you begin getting the error messages after installing QuickCam and Skype
or after you used System Restore? Your first post suggests the latter.

Did you try uninstalling QuickCam and Skype, preferably before you used any
Restore Points?
...I’ve tried every available restore point in August.

Not necessarily the wisest thing to do! Is your computer fully-patched at
Windows Update and were all of the Aug-09 update installed?

As per your instructions, the info produced was "Microsoft Windows XP, Home
Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3".

Excuse me for not making the state clear, but I began getting the pesky
error messages after installing Logitech QuickCam and Skype. In the interest
of full disclosure, at that time I also had MagicJack on the computer (which
probably uses a lot of system resources). I uninstalled MagicJack, then did
the System Restore to a time before I'd installed Logitech QuickCam and
Skype, which thereby removed them. I had the error messages both before and
after the System Restore.

sometimes when the
computer begins to
act up,

it could be an infection.

but system instability
is not always the result
of infections.

one example is that the
vm is set to auto, but
cannot expand to meet
the demand.

in any case, it wouldn't
hurt to tune up your machine
with something like
this:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/article/registry_cleaner_why.htm

incidentally, have you
booted into safemode
to checkout your system
stability?

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I tried Safe Mode, but found no solution
there. In any event, I acted on your suggestion to try a OneCare Live scan,
which is running at this moment (but will take hours). I wish I could be
hopeful, but I regularly use McCafee and Errorfix to scan for problems.

Neil, if you're replying to me, you'll need to quote my entire post.
Otherwise, I have no idea what you're talking about. (I do not access this
newsgroup via the web-interface you use.)

You'll also need to answer all of my questions in your replies.

"I regularly use ... Errorfix." When was the last time you used
Errorfix? Just before the problems started?

Think you might need a registry cleaner? Read this thread:
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099

And regarding Errorfix in particular:

http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-errorfix.html

and read user comments, not Cnet blurb, here:

not sure if it should take
hours.

you should double check
your virtual memory.

set is to custom with an
initial size to that mentioned
at the bottom of the vm window.

then set the max to 1.5 times
the amount of ram you have.

if you have 1 gig of ram, then
the max for the vm should be
1500 megs.
